Unless you’ve been boycotting society for the past few years, you definitely know, have met or heard of someone who’s vegan. Typically anyone vegan will make sure to let you know that they are vegan within the first 5 minutes of meeting you, and then again every hour or so for the rest of your conversation. They’ll probably send you an email to remind you that they’re vegan and check the “menu” multiple times before coming to your house for dinner.
That’s because those on a vegan diet are really passionate about the choices they make. For vegans, it’s more than just a diet–it’s a lifestyle ingrained in strong values and beliefs when it comes to using animal products in any way, shape or form. Often ridiculed and misunderstood, vegans make up 2% of the US population. This means that 1 in every 50 Americans is plant-based and completely avoids the use of animal products.
That’s a pretty substantial number and it only keeps growing - resulting in a market completely focused on providing people with cruelty-free products. And since November 1st is World Vegan Day, we wanted to dedicate this post to help our plant-based friends find and enjoy vegan snacks in the office!
The term “vegan” was coined in 1944, but the roots of animal-free diets can be traced back to ancient Indian, eastern Mediterranean societies and even Pythagoras’ teachings in 500 BCE. Followers of Buddhism, Hinduism and Jainism were also some of the first advocates of vegetarianism, believing that humans shouldn’t inflict pain on other animals.
It wasn’t until 1944 that the distinction between vegetarianism and veganism was made by a British woodworker named Donald Watson. He claimed that because vegetarians ate dairy and eggs, a new term was needed to describe those who didn’t. And voila! The word “vegan” was born.
The distinction between someone who’s vegetarian and someone who is vegan comes down to the inclusion of animal byproducts in their diet. For instance, while dairy products aren’t meat, they require the caging and labour of animals to produce them. The easiest way to determine if something is vegan or not is to ask: Is an animal required to make this?
And while vegetarians can consume anything vegan, vegans are very limited and have to double-check any product that is labelled as “vegetarian”.
So if you’re the one shopping for vegan snacks for your office, it’s important to know the difference in order to make sure there’s a healthy snack for every taste bud in your workplace!
A vegan diet has shown to reduce the symptoms of arthritis pain and stiffness while increasing the patient’s overall mobility. Shifting your focus to a plant-based diet can help mediate the pain and discomfort that come with this disorder.
Those who consume vegetarian and vegan diets tend to eat a wider variety of nutrient-rich fruits and vegetables, that are heavy in vitamins A, C, and E, magnesium and potassium.
It should be noted that a vegan lifestyle also typically reduces the intake of certain nutrients such as vitamin B-12 and iron. Luckily, there are foods and supplements that can be included in the diet to make up for their loss.
Vegan snacks and foods have been proven to lower blood sugar levels (due to the reduction in fats from meat and dairy products) which has the added benefit of improving kidney function in the long term.
Since vegan diets tend to be low-fat, people have cholesterol levels that are lower than normal. This means lower blood pressure and thus, reduced risk of heart disease.
Of course, the benefits of a vegan diet go far beyond the individual. Factory farming has an adverse effect on the environment and puts a strain on the agricultural industry.
Did you know that half of all crops grown go directly towards feeding animals for consumption? By not contributing to the profits of factory farms, vegans are directly benefiting not only the welfare of the animals but the welfare of our planet as well.
